Set on an idyllic strip of land between a white sand beach and tropical jungle, Mukan Resort officially debuts as the first luxury eco-resort in Mexico’s Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A paradise among the palms, Mukan offers barefoot luxury on the pristine Caribbean coast just south of the bustling, tourist-centric town of Tulum.

With remoteness central to its charm, the adventure to Mukan begins at the entrance of the biosphere where guests are whisked away by boat on a private 45-minute voyage through dense mangrove forests before reaching the resort’s private dock. Carved through the jungle of this pristine islet, the intimate retreat features just four standalone beachfront bungalows and a main villa housing five guest suites, each with its own private terrace. Guests meander the sandy paths towards a thatched-roof gourmet restaurant, oceanfront spa facility, alfresco cigar bar, as well as canopy beds on the beach and hammocks strung on the trees throughout the resort.  The property’s location allows guests to uniquely experience both a sunrise over the crystal blue Caribbean Sea and sunset from the dock overlooking the shimmering lagoon of Sian Ka’an in the same day.

The surrounding biosphere is one of Mexico’s largest protected areas with lush green forests, pristine wetlands, lagoons, extensive mangrove stands, cenotes, forested islets, sandy beaches as well as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The reserve is home to many species of animals such as jaguars, migratory birds, marine turtles, colorful fish species and more. Named by the ancient Maya inhabitants, Sian Ka’an translates to “origin of the sky” and was inspired by the area’s natural beauty. Furthermore, the name Mukan represents a metaphor for the abundancy of life and beauty found within the Sian Ka’an. Derived from the Mayan word ‘Xmucane’, Mukan represents the creator of everything we see surrounding the property.

In keeping with the responsibility of the biosphere, Mukan’s sustainability efforts are implemented through eco-friendly systems for energy generation and water purification. The use of solar panels, a wind turbine, water filtration and local materials for all construction needs are just some of ways Mukan is committed to reducing its ecological footprint.

Personalized fine dining also plays a central role in the Mukan experience, where the Chef carefully creates each meal in keeping with individual guest preferences, with no menus needed. Regional and international-inspired dishes are accented by locally-sourced and sustainable ingredients. Guests wake up to coffee and fresh coconuts delivered to their room before indulging in local breakfast specialties served under a shaded palm tree on the beach.  For lunch and dinner, the culinary team’s creativity shines with each dining experience differing from the last.  Guests may enjoy an island picnic or a laid-back lunch in a cabana, while dinner is presented fireside with the soundtrack of crashing waves or rooftop under the awe-inspiring starry night sky.

A sanctuary for relaxation, guests at Mukan will enjoy exclusive use of kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling equipment, bicycles and yoga mats, and can arrange off-site excursions through the concierge such as canoeing through the meandering mangroves, diving through the crystalline waters of the Yucatan’s famed cenotes, casting a line in the world-class fly fishing lagoons and more. Ideal for a romantic escape, quality time with friends and family, weddings, executive conferences or personalized wellness retreats, Mukan offers something for everyone.

Rates begin at $420 USD per night, based on double occupancy.  www.Mukan.com
